The 4 Stages of Lung Cancer By Randolph Meresmaa

Lung cancer is a disease that is very hard to cure with conventional medicine. About 80% of all cases of newly diagnosed lung cancer are the non-small cell type (NSCLC). A majority of these patients will
have inoperable disease on the basis of distant metastases or locally advanced disease. For the remaining patients with early stage disease as well as selected patients with locally advanced disease, surgery remains the best hope for cure.

Less than 15% of all patients can presently be expected to be cured of their disease. The changes that a patient has of being cured depends of the stage he/she is at. There are 4 stages of lung cancer and each stages requires different treatments, although none of these treatments unfortunately is very effective. Doctors may use several tests to accurately stage a lung cancer, including laboratory tests, X-rays, CT scans, bone scans, and MRI scans.

The 4 stages of lung cancer are

1) Stage 1 disease - Patients that have this early stage typically have no symptoms and most are cured with primary surgical excision. The tumors are mostly found on a routine chest radiograph. Nowadays many tumors are detected while they are still very small with computed tomography (CT). Morbidity and mortality increase with higher stages of disease and extended resections. The overall five-year survival for patients with completely resected stage I NSCLC is approximately 75%.

2) Stage 2 disease - Patients with T1-2N1 represent a small subset in the spectrum of this disease, usually comprising less than 10% of patients coming to surgery. The overall five-year survival of patients with Stage 2 tumors is approximately 50-60%. In this stage the tumors also start to invade the mediastinal pleura, fat, nerves, and pericardium, but not the major mediastinal vessels or organs.

3) Stage 3 disease - The preffered treatment for for patients in Stage 3 A is complete resection via lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection. Patients with left upper lobe tumors. have the best prognosis of all, with five-year survival rates as high as 42% when completely resected. Computed Tomography (CT) scanning 5 year survival rate is approximately 30% following complete surgical resection. Patients with Stage 3 B are considered inoperable. The five-year survival for patients with
T4 (carina) N0 tumors undergoing tracheal sleeve pneumonectomy has been reported to approach 20%.

4) Stage 4 disease - Surgery for this stage is only limited for young, healthy patients with a solitary site of metastatic disease, and an easily resectable primary tumor contained within the chest. Five-year survival in these patients should approach 20%. Even if a cure is not obtained, survival is prolonged and quality of life improved.

Prognosis For Lung Cancer - Treatment Review By Jenny Jackson

Can your cancer lung prognosis be improved? Cancer survivor, Karon Beattie, has compiled a cancer treatment reference book detailing over 350 alternative cancer treatments used by thousands of people who beat cancer. Although lung cancer is not always responsive to conventional cancer treatments, Beattie gives numerous accounts of people surviving lung cancer using alternative treatments. She states that these treatments are not covered by the FDA and usually not patentable by drug companies, resulting in poor knowledge among doctors.

Specifically in relation to lung cancer, Beattie's book, "Natural Cancer Treatments That Work", describes cases where a combination of nutritional supplements cured a patient's lung cancer. She gives an account of an across-the-counter supplement that nearly doubled the tumor response rate for non-small cell lung cancer in conjunction with chemotherapy.

Beattie goes on to describe how nine men with untreatable lung cancer experienced major improvements in their conditions after taking a common vitamin.

Beattie further describes a treatment that heats tumors without damaging surrounding tissue, resulting in survival rates of 91% at eighteen months after diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer for patients who had failed to respond to chemotherapy and radiation. This seems an astonishing outcome for a cancer given a poor prognosis by oncologists.

Beattie goes on to detail how a patented soup of cancer-fighting ingredients reversed a woman's stage IV non-small cell lung cancer and how a 54-year-old man eliminated a bean-sized tumor on his right lung after five weeks taking a mineral originally found in Lourdes, France, now more widely available. In addition, the author has collected first-hand accounts from 156 people who overcame lung cancer using natural and alternative treatments. It seems incredible that if stories like this are true, that they are not standard treatment for lung and other cancers.

Beattie says that the creators of the treatments detailed in her book, include respected Nobel Prize winners, biochemists, doctors, scientists and Ph.D.'s. She believes that many doctors may be unaware of these treatments because they only prescribe, and indeed are trained to prescribe treatments regulated by the FDA. Many of the alternative treatments she lists involve herbs and vitamins that are outside the jurisdiction of the FDA. Yet they are available.

Beattie does not advocate self-treatment and provides a detailed guide on where cancer patients can get these sorts of treatment and support.

Stories like these are hard to ignore for cancer sufferers and their loved ones who surely deserve the best available treatments.

Mesothelioma - How to Deal With It By Bernice Eker

To be completely honest, Mesothelioma cancer is uncommon and is generally caused by contact with asbestos. Asbestos, while very popular in earlier years for house building, has since been regarded as a cancer-causer and it generally causes over two-thousand cases of this type of cancer in the United Kingdom every single year.

There are a few different symptoms that you should watch out for and there are many different treatments that are available if you do believe you have Mesothelioma cancer. First and foremost, you should be warned that there are two different kinds of Mesothelioma cancer and many different Mesothelioma risks.

Some of the very first symptoms can be anything from a coughing fit all the way to chest pain and difficulty breathing. Generally, this type of Mesothelioma would be pleural, as it affects the lungs. If you are experiencing any abdomen pain or your stomach becomes swollen, peritoneal Mesothelioma may be the type of cancer you have.

The first is pleural Mesothelioma and the second type is peritoneal Mesothelioma. Both of these cancers have different symptoms and treatments. Surgery is one of the most common treatments for pleural Mesothelioma which tends to make the lining of your lungs thicket. Surgery can not be used to treat peritoneal Mesothelioma though, so be aware of that.

Chemotherapy is another treatment that is extremely popular as it can reduce and eliminate symptoms most of the time. Although, chemotherapy when treating Mesothelioma cancer generally does not work alone and needs a back up treatment such as radioactive cancer treatment, so that is something to be aware of if you are looking to chemotherapy as an answer to all of your prayers.

When it comes to filing a Mesothelioma claim, there are many different ways to do it and you need to be sure that you learn everything you can, so you can make a solid claim. There are many different things to consider when filing this type of claim and it is very important that you are very organized and you are taking notes of everything that you remember. All of the experience and details are critical when it comes to a claim, for you could be suing companies for millions of dollars.

If you believe you may have gotten this type of cancer from your job, it is very important that you take your job conditions, work clothing, everything into detail so you can be as accurate as possible. Nailing down all of the details of your job is a great way to ensure that your claim will go through without any problems and if you are curious to know exactly what a Mesothelioma claim should cover it should be: medical expenses, pain and suffering expenses, loss of income and any shortened life expectancy.

Mesothelioma cancer is a terrible cancer and it can be fatal if not treated right away, so it is very important to deal with it right away if you begin to experience some of the symptoms of Mesothelioma.

How to Lower Your Risk of Getting Lung Cancer By Alan Wighton

It is very rare for lung cancer to only have one cause; we know that because not everybody who smokes cigarettes gets lung cancer. I had an uncle who smoked most of his life and died at the grand age of 99. Fortunately he was smart enough to give up smoking in his sixties. Rather than simply being caused by passing smoke through your lungs, lung cancer is typically triggered by many causes, smoking being the main one. The other causes of lung cancer are nutritional deficiencies, toxins in your environment, our sedentary lifestyle and sometimes emotional conflict.

Now passing smoke through your lungs is not a very clever thing to do, we do it at a young age because we think we're invincible and maybe we are, but as we age we most definitely are not. The biggest health problem with the habit of smoking is, it inhibits the body from absorbing the vitamins and minerals we so badly need to maintain our health. It also irritates the delicate linings of the lungs and cancer will take hold in some part of the body that has been weakened by any damage or irritation.

The food we eat on a daily basis is the foundation of our health. Our diets today have changed vastly and the typical western diet is not known for its health giving qualities. We may think we are eating well but when you consider that we are designed to eat only freshly grown fruit and vegetables, a few whole grains and one or two other items one can see that we have strayed far from a healthy diet. A big percentage of our food intake these days is processed food and nearly all of it is nutritional dead food because of its processing and because it's old. Our poor food choices are most certainly a major contributor to all cancers.

Most of the chemicals we surround ourselves with these days are extracted from crude oil, in other words the petro-chemical industry and they do effect us. 100 years ago there weren't any chemicals but today we are overwhelmed by them. We breathe them in as in exhaust gases from motor vehicles, we use them on our body as in personal care products, even so called natural ones have some chemicals in them, and we take them in directly in the form of food additives. They are also in the homes we live in, because of the many products used in the building industry.

The human body was designed to be physically active and if we neglect this basic function we'll inevitably pay the price in the form of health problems. Some form of exercise on a daily bases is very important to both avoid cancer and to fight cancer. Once again because of the motor car and cheap oil, we seldom get the exercise we so badly need. When we exercise we are enriching our bodies with oxygen and cancer cells cannot survive in an oxygenated environment. That was proven back in 1931.

Emotional conflict can weaken our immune system and that is well recognised. It's because we're holding onto a problem like a personal crises in some form and it's wearing us down. The only solution I can suggest is to seek help to resolve the issues.

Our bodies have amazing self healing powers that can eliminate cancer, but we have to provide the right conditions to allow that to happen. The bottom line is, you need to take charge of your cancer and no one can do it for you. Appropriate diet and lifestyle changes are your first line of defence.

The Warning Signs of Pleural Mesothelioma By Aaron Almus

If you have ever been exposed to asbestos, whether directly or from a spouse whom was, then you will want to read this article. There are two main symptoms of pleural mesothelioma that you need to look out for: difficulty breathing and chest pain. I will explain each in this article so that you have a better awareness of when you need to put the pride away and go see a doctor.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer found in the lungs and abdomen. Estimates show it affects over 2000 people every year in the states alone. This disease is the direct result of asbestos exposure. However, nearly a quarter of all diagnosed had no exposure to asbestos. So even if you never had exposure and you find yourself with the following pleural mesothelioma symptoms you need to see a doctor.

Pleural mesothelioma is cancer that is found in the pleura of the lungs. The pleura is the lining or membrane that surrounds the lung tissue. This lining has two layers: visceral and parietal. The visceral is the inner layer while the parietal is the outer. In between them is lubricating fluid to help the two layers slide over each other as our lungs contract and expand for our breathing. When one begins the early stages of pleural mesothelioma the cancer can cause the layers to become thicker. This can result in the pleural mesothelioma symptoms; difficulty breathing and chest pain.

Obviously difficulty breathing is a common symptom for many ailments. So don't conclude that you have mesothelioma. You need to visit a doctor as soon as you can.

In pleural mesothelioma you begin to have shortness of breath and difficulty breathing because of the two layers of the lining pushing against each other. The layers create more tension because they become thicker as mesothelioma develops. This can also cause discomfort from swallowing and regular coughing. It can also cause hoarseness of the throat and coughing up of blood.

Another symptom is pain in the chest. Naturally as the layers become thicker due to the growth of cancer cells and push against your lungs causing shortness of breath they can also cause chest pain because of the added pressure. The pain typically begins on the side and spreads up to your shoulders and neck.

If you experience either of these symptoms you should consult a doctor right away. As pleural mesothelioma spreads the symptoms will become worse. Visit a doctor and make it a point to notify him or her if you have had any exposure to asbestos and your history of it. There is evidence that a person can get this cancer indirectly from exposure to someone that had direct exposure with asbestos. So if your spouse worked in a high asbestos exposure occupation make sure you tell your doctor.

Smoking and Mesothelioma By Joseph Devine

Smoking tobacco products has long been held as the world's culprit for any disease. Fortunately for smoking, it is not the culprit behind mesothelioma. In fact, smoking does not ever cause mesothelioma. So far, the only scientifically linked cause of mesothelioma has been exposure to asbestos.

While it is true that smoking does not cause mesothelioma, it does not help anyone who has been diagnosed either. In addition, those who have been exposed to asbestos, either recently or a long time ago, should not smoke because smoking increases the chances of developing mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure.

Once a person has been exposed to asbestos, smoking is known to complicate the chances of developing an illness directly linked to asbestos. People who smoke and have been exposed to asbestos have 50 to 84 times the chance of developing asbestos as people who do not smoke and have been exposed to asbestos. There is therefore a related effect between smoking and asbestos, although smoking does not cause mesothelioma.

In the case of people who are scared that they will develop mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos, the best thing to do is quit smoking. Smoking is known to weaken and damage the lungs. In addition, it is known to reduce the body's natural defenses and ability to remove asbestos fibers. When the fibers cannot be removed by the body, they are allowed to stay in the lungs and continue to irritate cells. This leads to more cell damage and scarring which increases the odds of developing mesothelioma down the line.

Another nasty side effect of smoking is that smoke from cigarettes irritates air passages and causes the body to produce more mucus in the lungs. The production of mucus prevents air from getting into the deeper parts of the lungs and in turn prevents the removal of asbestos fibers.

Once a person knows he or she has been exposed to asbestos, the top priority should be working on quitting smoking. A smoker that has ever in their entire life been exposed to asbestos should see a doctor to be checked for symptoms of mesothelioma and other diseases that are directly related to asbestos. Even if there aren't any signs or symptoms of the disease, the trip to the doctor is imperative for early detection.

Mesothelioma is Almost Always Caused by Exposure to Asbestos By Wayne Wilkinson

Every organ in our body has a thin lining around it. This lining is made up of cells called mesothelial cells. The mesothelium (lining) that is made up of mesothelial cells lines the thoracic cavity, heart and abdominal cavity. Due to some factors, the mesothelial cells divide uncontrollably, become abnormal and cannot be stopped. When this happens in the lungs, then you will be diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

In the United States, there are 3000 cases of pleural mesothelioma yearly. Of these 3000 cases more than half of them are men. Depending on the time of diagnosis and its metastasis, the prognosis is usually poor. If it has spread to many parts then you will probably have 1 year to live.

This fatal illness is mainly caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally and is is mined from rocks found in different countries. It is composed of small fibers as strong as the metal steel. These fibers can be woven and are resistant to chemicals or heat. Back in the days, asbestos was used for construction, insulation, ship building and in many household appliances.

When this asbestos is damaged or destroyed in anyway, tiny fibers are released into the air. When you inhale them, they go into the smallest spaces in the lungs where you cannot cough them out. When the body realizes there is a foreign object, it tries to get rid of it by breaking it down into pieces. By breaking it down, this causes injury to the body and inflammation happens. In 10-30 years you will develop pleural mesothelioma. If you are a construction worker, electrician, ship builder, lumber, demolition worker or a boiler maker then you have a high chance of getting exposed to this deadly mineral.

If you work in these places and have a family or live with friends, there is a high chance you are bringing this fibers home and this can cause the same disease to other people. Therefore when someone has pleural mesothelioma it many not necessarily be caused by first hand exposure to asbestos, it may be the person you live with who comes home with the fibers on this cloths or even hair. This is not a contagious illness therefore do not be cautious if living with a sick person.

The other cause of pleural mesothelioma is exposure to radiation. If you happen to work in a radiation department or you are exposed to ultraviolet rays, this can cause over growth of cells in any organ causing cancer. You are expected to wear protective gear when in a radiation room. Patients that have also had X-rays done with the use of thorium dioxide were later diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. During a study, they suspected that a simian virus which was a component of the polio vaccine used in the early 1960s caused mesothelioma but this was not definite. In the meantime a study is being conducted in the U.K to find more causes of this disease.
